The story unfolds in the Republic of Gilead, a nation under military rule, characterized by strict regulations and traditions. In this society, only officers and their wives are esteemed and hold positions of respect. Curiously, the wives of officers are unable to conceive, causing a dilemma for the continuation of their lineage. To address this issue, officers and their wives select a young woman from the general population to bear their child. These chosen girls, who carry the potential heirs of the officers, reside in secure facilities similar to prisons. They are aware that they will be separated from their newborns soon after delivering them.
