The story unfolds in 1880s Kansas, where 13-year-old Lucas Hollister and his younger brother become orphans after their parents' passing. Lucas finds himself in a dire situation when he unintentionally causes the death of a farmer, resulting in a death sentence. Fortunately, his grandfather, the infamous criminal Harland Rast, steps in to save him by aiding in his escape from prison. Together, they flee to Mexico, only to be chased by US Marshal Wood Helm and a bounty hunter nicknamed "The Preacher".
